WHY YOU NEED A SHRUB AND TREE TREATMENT?

Homeowners strive to maintain healthy plants in their gardens and landscapes, but often shrubs and trees suffer casualties or fall ill from diseases for a variety of reasons. From too little watering to pest infestation, proper disease identification is crucial to the survival of your shrubs. The disease diagnosis and treatment of each species vary.

COMMON INSECTS THAT DIMINISH SHRUBS AND TREES

  • JAPANESE BEETLES
These insects indiscriminately eat parts of the foliage and even the flowers sometimes. Their damage appears like little holes in the leaves. They often attack in late June when the grubs have turned to adult beetles. In a worst-case scenario, these beetles can defoliate a tree in 3 – 4 days. You can lure beetles away from your landscape with beetle bags which are a combination of cultural and chemical control.
  • APHIDS
Aphids are the number one insect in shrub and tree problems. It is often found in colonies, especially on the first lush green growth. They suck the sap from the stems. They can be controlled by washing off stems with water or spraying with an insecticide containing Acephate or Malathion.
  • SPIDER MITES
Generally, spider mites do not kill plants by themselves but those plants will become prone to other problems. The infestation of spider mites typically begins to make the landscape look dull in appearance. This is true as they suck the plant dry until the shrubs and trees then turn to a dull yellow. Chemical control is generally the best option when it comes to spider mites.
  • SCALES
These insects are often mistaken for disease because they appear like cocoon bumps along the stems of plants. They stick themselves to the plant and suck on the juices, drying it out and causing severe damage. Scales are perceived to be the hardest insects to control. If left untreated, they will infest the landscape and devour any plant they want. Chemical control is the best option available.
  • BAGWORMS
These are caterpillars that make very noticeable spindle-shaped bags on a variety of trees and shrubs. They attack both deciduous trees and evergreens, but they are most damaging to Junipers. A large population of bagworms can speedily strip plants of their foliage and eventually lead to death. If only a few shrubs are trees are infected, picking the bags off by hand and disposing of them may serve as a momentary control measure. This approach is most effective during fall-winter or early springs before their eggs must have hatched
  • BLACK VINE WEEVIL
The damage caused by weevils appears on the foliage in the form of “C” shape feeding patterns. When the eggs of weevils hatch, they appear as legless grubs that feed on the roots of the plants. Weevil grub feeding is popularly known to have the capability to take out an entire plant even before you begin to see the damage on the leaves, while the weevil adult feeding generally leaves the landscape dull and unappealing. Chemical control is the best alternative.
  • BRONZE BIRCH BORER
When Borer severely infests a birch, holes where they have entered the tree are visible on the part of the trees that have less source of sunlight. The early stages of the birch borer show early brown colors in foliage and leaf drop. The branches of trees usually drop when the damage becomes severe. Long-term damage will cause the loss of limbs and eventually kill the tree. Trees without a Pest Management Program will only live for about 15-20 years. If a tree is infested, a systematic injection into the tree or soil will help control the insect.

Shrub & Tree Treatment

COMMON TREE & SHRUB DISEASES

  • POWDERY MILDEW
When shrubs and trees are infected with powdery mildew, the leaves’ color will turn to white or gray film in the late summer causing the leave to turn brown and drop early. The most alarming part of it is the wind can blow spores from leaf to leaf. Over time, this disease causes stress to the trees and weakens the plant. To avoid these, make sure your plants receive full sunlight in a well-drained area.
  • ANTHRACNOSE
This is a popular disease that can cause brown, dry, and blotchy Spots on the Leaves. It may even cause the leaves to wither and fall. Anthracnose usually infests most plants early in the season. In cool and wet conditions, this disease will spread to a variety of trees causing the trees to become fragile and weak. It can also cause the leaves to curl up along the veins and die. To Control this Disease, disinfect your pruning tool in a bleach solution. You should also destroy all leaves that have dropped.
  • BLACK KNOT
When you closely observe the twigs of trees, you can see soft olive green growth in a black-knot-infested plant. This olive green growth will eventually change to hard black knots in the fall. This disease is popularly known to attack fruits and branches. If these diseases are not treated, it could be life-threatening. Prevention is the key to controlling a hard knot. You can prune four inches away from the signs of infection to help the disease from spreading.
  • LEAF SPOT DISEASES
This disease visibly creates spots on leaves. The color of these spots is often brown, but sometimes can also be tan or black. Dark margin or concentric rings around the spots may also be visible. In wet conditions, leaf spots can spread throughout the Landscape Area. It is often too late to apply a chemical for control that is why prevention is always advised. Water trees deeply during dry spells to reduce stress. Ensure that you do not water over the top of the leaves. Every fall, rake out and destroy diseased leaves.
  • APPLE SCAB
In the late spring and early summer, apple and crabapple trees drop their leaves as a result of Apple Scab Disease. The leaves will have brown and black spots all over. This disease spread throughout the rest of the trees if not treated early. This will cause more leaves to fall off prematurely. Apple scab will kill a plant over time if not treated. Combatting apple scabs can be a timely and unpleasant weekend task.
  • VERTICILLIUM WILT
Trees that are affected by this disease will start to have a rapid decline in health. Verticillium wilt typically begins on leaves, then moves down to the twig shoots, and in the long run, takes out the entire plant. The leaves of the infected tree will appear like it’s been severely scorched by the sun and then start to fall. This disease can kill a healthy Norway maple in just a season.

In most cases with an infestation of insects and disease, there is a need for professional control and prevention. If not done right, you can permanently damage or destroy your shrub and trees. That is why most homeowners seek professional help.
